Straight to the point, ya can’t just wear any outfit for your session because sometimes certain outfits that look great in real life can be distracting in photos. I want you to love the images that are delivered, so it is important to put some thought into what you bring to wear while keeping it true to your personalities.
It is best to bring options so that you don’t show up to the shoot with just one outfit, because what happens if the outfit doesn’t vibe with the location and light? You’re stuck with it. And in so many cases I have heard couples say, “I wish I would have also brought….”.
So I encourage my clients to bring 3-4 outfit options (per person) so we can mix and match them to look best with each location and the light we have that day. Any more than this, is kinda too much as it begins to take away from our shooting time. And having a handful of options to mix and match, gives us options for each different scenery/location we shoot.
I’m always aiming to keep the focus on my client’s faces, since my style is so heavily based on emotion and storytelling. If there’s a lot going on in the rest of the frame that’s distracting from the emotion, I want to eliminate as much “noise” as I can, and a huge way I do that is by using tools like strategic tone matching and color choices for outfits and locations.
Bring a few options per person, 3-4 outfits including accessories you would normally wear. This way we can mix and match with our locations accordingly. Also, when changing outfits it might be just out in nature, vs trekking back and forth to the car for every set change. SO this could be your partner holding up a blanket around you or just deciding to quickly strip down — all adds to the fun right, lol!
Probably one of the most important parts! I want these images to look and feel like YOU. So, be sure to use these suggestions as a guide in helping to select your outfits. I still want you to have some creative freedom with what you are wearing so that reflects you as a couple and your mind is on your love, vs what you are wearing.
Layers or flowing fabrics can help create movement and add a depth of texture to what you are wearing. Movement is so important with how I shoot as it brings a fun energy to the session. Take into consideration the time of year and the fabrics you are choosing… I want you to feel comfortable and able to move without restriction. With footwear, also keep in mind the area we are going to be shooting in and select what you would be comfortable moving and playing in.
Choose colors that are complimentary to your skin tones AND the location environment we are shooting in. This helps to make sure it’s your love that shines thru with your emotions and connection, vs all the attention pulling to your outfit.
I typically recommend people lean towards neutrals and muted colors, as they are what will reflect as the most timeless and offer minimal distraction.
Please stay away from colors that can cast unnatural colors onto your partner’s skin. This happens when light reflects and bounces off of your clothing onto the other person. It can reflect on the bottom of a neck/chin, as well as other exposed skin areas, or even any white clothing that either of you may be wearing.
Colors that bounce are typically fluorescents, but specifically the ones that cast the strongest; light green, pink, bright red, orange, and yellow. This makes it pretty difficult when editing, so be sure to steer clear of all these.
